收藏珍品
鸡血石堪称国宝，一因稀少，二因用处特殊。
稀少，是因为世界只有中国有，我国最早发现的鸡血石是浙江昌化玉岩山鸡血石。后来又发现了内蒙古赤峰市巴林右旗的巴林鸡血石。20世纪90年代又在 陕西、甘肃、四川、湖南、云南等地发现了鸡血石。由于现在的昌化朱砂（汞矿）已近尾声，所以出产的鸡血石产量相当有限，市场价格日增不衰。
出产于浙江省临安市浙西大峡谷源头玉岩山的昌化鸡血石，形成于7500万年前的火山活动，发现和开采已有1000多年历史。清乾隆年间所修的《浙江 通志》记载："昌化县产图章石，红点若朱砂，亦有青紫如玳瑁，良可爱玩，近则罕得矣"，由此一方面可见当时昌化鸡血石在民间的流行与影响；另一方面也从中 得知那时候就开采得差不多了。
而用处，一般用于印章和雕刻品，达官显贵的印章，尤其是国玺，以及国际之间的友谊赠品。如康熙、乾隆、咸丰、同治、宣统皇帝、慈禧太后均以鸡血石为 宝玺，毛泽东主席也曾经使用和珍藏昌化鸡血石。1784年，乾隆下江南，临安天目山禅源寺主持曾献8厘米昌化石一方，乾隆大喜，即刻"乾隆之宝"四字，并 注明"昌化鸡血石"。1972年，中日恢复邦交，周恩来总理选用昌化鸡血石作为国礼，馈赠日本田中角荣首相珍品印章一对。

石中精华
