当今盛产鸡血石的浙江昌化玉岩山基本已被掏空，山上基本无产量，其资源已近枯竭，有些矿主几年挖不到一块鸡血石。为保护稀缺资源，政府早在2002年就开始禁止鸡血石矿的开采。因此价格这几年呈几何级数上升，一二年翻一番、十来年上涨几十倍已习以为常。
鸡血石最早于明代初期发现于浙江昌北龙岗镇囯石村。到了清朝，乾隆下江南，天目山禅源寺主持曾献8厘米高的一方昌化鸡血石印章，乾隆皇帝十分喜欢，制成“乾隆之宝”印，经常把玩。
为什么鸡血石会有这样大的升值空间呢?
有专家说，鸡血石的颜色艳如鸡血，民间一直有用鸡血驱鬼避邪的说法，并有鸡血的红红火火，象征事业兴旺、喜气之意，成为人间的吉祥之物。而它的珍贵 最主要的原因还是物以稀为贵，由于鸡血石矿中含有汞，国家曾经大规模采矿炼汞，当前剩余的鸡血石少之又少，精品更是十分难得，因此价格急剧蹿升成为理所当 然。
昌化鸡血石的硬度为摩氏2-2.5度，蜡状光泽，以血色、血形、血量和地子四方面评价原石的价值。血色具备“鲜、活、凝、厚”的为上品：鲜，指血色 的艳丽亮泽;活，指血色有灵气，像刚宰杀的鸡流淌下来鲜红淋漓的活血;凝，指血色聚而不散，成块面而不是零星的斑斑点点;厚，指血色有厚度、有层次、有深 度。若鸡血石方章，章璧六面满地皆红(也称六面见血，长方形印章六个面70%以上都布满红色血)，就是罕见的“大红袍”，十分珍贵。
一方“六面血”鸡血石章，就是印石界中说的“大红袍”，属于珍稀品种，一二百万人民币价格交易不足为奇，以后的升值空间应该还很大。
